Privacy Policy

Who we are
North Bay Local ("we", "us") runs the North Bay Local app for iPhone and Android, the website northbaylocalapp.com, and the memberships sold through them. Our address is 336 Bon Air Center Rd #280, Greenbrae, CA 94904.
This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It covers the app, the website and our emails, but not the merchants you visit or the payment, map and store services named below, which have their own policies.
What we collect
You can browse offers, the map and search without an account. We collect personal information only when you create an account, buy a membership or claim an offer.
- Account details: your name, email address, phone number, password (stored only in scrambled, hashed form) and whether you want offer emails.
- Membership and payment: your membership number, plan, renewal date and subscription status, from our payment processor, Stripe. Your card details go straight to Stripe; we never see or store your full card number.
- Offer claims: which offer you claimed, at which merchant, when, and its listed value.
- Promo codes: the fundraiser, affiliate or promotion code you used to join.
- Older sign-ups: a mailing address, if you gave one through our earlier web sign-up.
- Website visits: pages viewed, how you arrived (including links shared from the app), device and browser type and approximate area, through Google Analytics cookies on northbaylocalapp.com.
- Technical logs: IP address, app or browser version and the time of each request to our servers.
- Sponsored offers: how many times each sponsored offer card is shown and tapped, as anonymous daily totals. Nothing about who saw or tapped it is sent or kept.
- We do not collect your contacts, photos, health data or activity in other apps.
How we use it
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with others for their own advertising. We use it to:
- Run your account and membership: sign you in, keep your membership active, renew and cancel it, and stop an offer being claimed more often than its rules allow.
- Show your savings: add up the value of the offers you have claimed.
- Run promo code campaigns: count paid sign-ups per code, so a school or partner can be credited.
- Support you: answer questions and fix problems with your account.
- Keep the service safe: spot and stop fraud, abuse and unauthorized access.
- Improve the app and website, using totals rather than individual activity wherever we can.
- Send emails, as described below.
We send two kinds of email. Offer emails always say who they are from, include our postal address, and are never sent with misleading subject lines.
- Account emails: password resets, membership receipts and renewal notices from Stripe, and important notices about your account or this policy. You get these as long as you have an account.
- Offer emails: new merchants, offers and app news. You get these only if "Email me new offers" is on. Turn it off in the app under Account, My Account, or with the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every offer email. We act on an unsubscribe within 10 business days.
Who we share it with
We share personal information only with the companies that run parts of the service for us, under contracts that limit them to that work, and in the few cases below. Apple and Google also handle information about your app download under their own policies.
- Amazon Web Services hosts our servers and database, stores backups and sends our emails.
- Stripe takes membership payments and manages subscriptions.
- Google draws the maps in the app and measures website visits (Google Analytics).
- Cloudflare runs our website's domain and network.
- An email service we choose sends offer emails to members who have them turned on.
- Merchants see the claim screen you show them when you redeem an offer. We may tell a merchant how many times its offers were claimed, but not who claimed them.
- Merchants who pay for a sponsored offer may be told how many times it was shown, tapped and claimed while it ran, but not by whom.
- Fundraiser groups and partners may be told how many people joined with their codes and how much those sign-ups brought in, but not who those people are.
- When the law requires it, or to protect people, our members or the service from fraud or harm.
- If the business changes hands, your information may pass to the new owner, who must follow this policy or tell you before changing it.
Location
If you allow it, the app uses your phone's location to show merchants near you and how far away they are. This happens on your phone: your location is not sent to us or stored by us. The map itself is drawn by Google, which receives the area being shown.
The app works without location; you just won't see distances or a "Nearby" list. You can change this at any time in your phone's settings.
Keeping and deleting your information
We keep your account information while you have an account. You can delete your account at any time in the app: Account, then Delete account. When you do:
- Your name, email, phone number, password and any address are deleted.
- Your past offer claims are kept, with nothing linking them to you, so merchants' claim counts stay correct.
- Copies in our backups are erased as the backups expire, within 90 days.
- Stripe keeps records of payments you made, as tax and payment laws require. If you have a paid membership, cancel it first under Account, Manage or cancel membership.
- Technical logs are kept for a short time for security and troubleshooting, then deleted.
- You can also ask us to delete your information by emailing us.
Your choices, and California rights
We do not sell personal information or share it for advertising across other companies' sites and apps. If you live in California, you may ask us once a year whether we have shared your personal information with others for their direct marketing; we have not. Email us with any privacy request and we will answer within 30 days.
- See or correct your details: in the app under Account, My Account, or by emailing us.
- Stop offer emails: turn off "Email me new offers", or use the unsubscribe link in any offer email.
- Location: allow or block it in your phone's settings.
- Delete your account: in the app, as above.
- Website analytics: block cookies in your browser, or use Google's opt-out add-on.
Security
Everything between the app, the website and our servers is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Our database and backups are encrypted, passwords are stored only in hashed form, and staff access needs a password plus a code sent by email.
No system is completely secure. If a breach affects your information, we will tell you by email as quickly as we can, as California law requires.
Children, and Do Not Track
The app is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you think a child under 13 has given us information, email us and we will delete it.
Our website does not currently change its behavior when a browser sends a Do Not Track signal. The app does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
Changes, and contacting us
We update the date at the top whenever this policy changes. If a change affects how we use information you have already given us, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
